A lung cancer takes many years to develop. However, changes in the lung can begin almost immediately upon exposure to carcinogens. Carcinogens are cancer-causing substances. Soon after exposure begins, microscopic examination of the tissue lining the bronchi, the main breathing tubes will reveal a few unusual cells. With continued exposure, more abnormal cells appear. These cells may be on their way to becoming cancerous and forming a tumor.

The symptoms of the cancer vary depending on several factors, including where in the lung the tumor is found. If the cancer is located in one of the bronchi, it can irritate the lining of the bronchus, one of the main airways that branches off of the trachea or windpipe and cause a chronic cough. The cancerous area may bleed when a person coughs. If the tumor grows larger, it may gradually fill the bronchus so that air can’t pass in or out. A blocked bronchus may also cause repeated lung infections or pneumonia. A tumor located in the outer part of the lung may not produce any symptoms until it is fairly large. Sometimes the first sign may be chest pain from the tumor growing into the lining of the lungs or the ribs and muscle of the chest wall.

I am 20 years old my face is still prone to pimples. I would like to consult a dermatologist but I cannot afford to because I am still a student. I was told by a friend to use a popular brand of antibacterial soap and moisturizer. Now, I wash my face with regular soap and apply moisturizer after. Am I doing right?

Can you tell me the proper way to use moisturizer? Will it help clear pimples? What can I use to remove scarring from pimples?

Acne is greatest during the pubertal years-middle to late teens. However, it may begin in the 20’s or 30’s in some and persist for many years. There are government institutions offering free medical checkups for dermatologic conditions and I recommend that you see a specialist. If acne is not treated well, you may have more scars.

Antibiotics are prescribed for inflammatory types of acne to decrease the number of bacteria in the follicle, such as topical benzoyl peroxide, erythromycin and clindamycin for mild cases; and oral tetracycline and minocycline for severe cases. Antibacterial soaps are helpful but sometimes inadequate.

Moisturizers are not highly recommended for oily, acne-prone skin. If your skin is dry, you may need a moisturizing cream. Use a noncomedogenic moisturizer for your type of skin.

Acne scar treatment should be left to dermatologists. Ask your dermatologist about bleaching preparations, chemical peel, microdermabrasion (diamond peel), dermabrasion and laser resurfing.
